Sicherman

Michael E. Brown Funeral Services
4:00 - 6:00 pm (Eastern time)
Dr. Mark J. Sicherman, formerly of Cazenovia and Syracuse, New York died Tuesday, April 7, 2026. He was 91 years old.
Mark, or Jim, as he was known to his friends, was born in Hudson, New York, to Joseph and Vera (Millman) Sicherman.
A keen and precocious student, Jim graduated from Hudson High School and enrolled at Columbia University at the age of 17. At Columbia he pursued a pre-med course of study and minored in French. He also found time to engage in college theater and explore Manhattan’s rich cultural life, which he truly loved.
Upon graduation from Columbia, Jim was accepted to Albany Medical College where he completed his studies. At this time, Jim married his first wife, Marcia (Westpfahl). After graduation, Jim joined the U.S. Army at the rank of Captain. He was stationed at an Army hospital in Wurzburg, Germany, for two years, where he served as chief of pediatrics.
Upon returning from Germany, Jim and his young family settled in Camillus, where he maintained a thriving pediatrics practice for several years. As Jim’s social consciousness broadened, he sought employment in settings where he could deliver medical care to economically and socially disadvantaged patients. He was employed at Syracuse’s Neighborhood Health Center for a time, followed by work in developmental pediatrics at Seguin Community Services.
By this time, Jim was divorced from his first wife and had married his second wife, Dorothy “Dani” Riposo, who brought to the marriage five children by her previous husband. The newly-joined family, with a total of nine children, eventually moved from Syracuse to a house constructed on a 200 acre former farm in Erieville, New York.
As Jim’s interests in healing and wellness broadened, he began training in the burgeoning field of Bioenergetic Therapy. After completion of extensive training in New York City, Jim co-founded the Center for Holistic Living and the Center for Mind Body Integration in Syracuse’s Armory Square District. He later continued this work in private practice for many years.
In addition to his work as a physician, Jim was an avid writer. He authored a collection of short stories, Levels of Consciousness, and co-authored a well-regarded self-help book entitled, Self Cure: You Can Do More for Your Health Than Your Doctor Can.
In his later years of retirement, Jim kept active with exercise and daily walks. He also enjoyed reading and was an especially big fan of Irish novelists.
Jim was predeceased by his second wife, Dani, and their grandson, Michael Hackney. He is survived by his sister, Linda Esner, nine children, fifteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many close friends. The family would like to thank Dr. Steven Duffy, Dr. David Urciuoli, and the physicians and staff of Upstate University Hospital for their kindness and care.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday, April 16, 2026 at Michael E. Brown Funeral Services, 2333 Fenner Road in Cazenovia. Private graveside services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Central New York and of the Finger Lakes, 990 Seventh North St., Liverpool, NY 13088.
