Edward Ryan's Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Edward Barker Ryan, 90, of The Villages, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on March 30, 2026. Born on January 1, 1936, in Cazenovia, New York, to Howard and Marion (Barker) Ryan, Ed grew up surrounded by family, love, and community. His father served as Mayor of Cazenovia, and the Ryan family was well known through their local car dealership. When Ed lost his father in his teenage years, he stepped quietly and without hesitation into the role of family anchor — a role he would carry with deep devotion for the rest of his long life.

Ed married his lifelong love, Janice Katherine Petersen, daughter of Raymond and Helen (Grady) Petersen of Cazenovia. He often told the story with a smile: the first day of kindergarten, when Janice sat in front of him, he knew she would be his everything. She was. Together they built a life defined by family, laughter, and an ever-growing circle of people who felt loved by them both.

After the passing of his beloved Janice, Ed was fortunate to find Beverly, a kind, fun, supportive and loving person who became his second wife. They shared many joyous times together (acting in plays, hosting parties). They were there for each other, and, regardless of their ages, they did an excellent job of having fun and making the most out of the life they had. “Life is for the living,” Ed would say — and he meant it every time.

Outside of his work, Ed’s great joys were time on the water aboard his beloved boat, Cheers, and decades of friendship and golf as President of the Cazenovia Golf Club. He was known for his warmth, his humor, and his genuine pride in every member of his family.

Before he passed, Ed had the profound gift of knowing every one of his descendants — and he made sure each of them knew how proud he was.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his devoted and loving wife, Janice; his brother, William Ryan; his granddaughter, Ashley Ryan; and his great-grandson, River Bateman.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly Ryan; his five children, Timothy (Terri) Ryan of Tafton, PA, Kathleen Ryan of Brewerton, NY, Howard (Beth) Ryan of Cazenovia, NY, Raymond (Colleen) Ryan of Clay, NY, and Pamela Ryan of Syracuse, NY; his siblings, Richard (Gail) Ryan and Janet Burghard of The Villages; his grandchildren, Robert Bateman, Edward Bateman, Jason (Elizabeth) Bateman, Sean (Jamie) Ryan, Samantha (Mathew) Verzi, Lindsey Ryan, Timothy Ryan, Amy (Robert) Florez, Tracy (Kyle) Westerlünd, Alexandra (Ryan) Axenfeld, Ellan (Aaron) Ryan-Draper, and Sarah K.D. Ryan; and his great-grandchildren, Ava Bateman, Ella Leach, Isla Ryan, Andie Ryan, Mac Ryan, Vela Verzi, Caiden Axenfeld, Brayden Bateman, Eliana Bateman, Evan Florez, and Miles Florez.

Ed’s passing marks a profound moment in the life of this family. He was a source of joy, pride, and love for life — and he will be deeply, deeply missed.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m., Friday, April 24, 2026 at Michael E. Brown Funeral Services, 2333 Fenner Road in Cazenovia with burial to follow in St. James Cemetery. A calling hour will be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., Friday, April 24, 2026 at the funeral home prior to the service.
