Jane Schopfer Cody, 82, of Cazenovia passed away Thursday, July 23, 2026.
She was born in Utica on May 29, 1944 to Rolland and Jane Schopfer. Jane earned her Bachelor's degree from Nazareth College and her Master's in Art Education from Syracuse University. She retired from the Morrisville-Eaton Central School District where she was employed for 15 years as an art teacher at the high school.
Jane's creativity touched every part of her life. She found beauty and possibility in what others might overlook, and encouraged her students and family to think independently. She had little patience for coloring books, favoring imagination that wasn't confined by the lines — and she brought that same spirit to everything she did.
Jane was self-reliant, resilient and deeply devoted to her children. During her 52-year marriage to Kendall, she embraced farm life and made it her own through her creativity. Through Cody's Corners, she sold handwoven baskets, barrel-stave pieces, wood art and cow-themed creations at local craft shows. She also loved ending the day with Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy! or a PBS documentary.
Above all, Jane loved her family fiercely. She treasured time with her grandchildren and delighted in welcoming them into her art studio, baking with them and occasionally spoiling them with a McDonald's Happy Meal. She was a thoughtful listener with a vibrant sense of humor and a laugh that brightened many rooms. She cherished her dear, lifelong friends and never passed up a game of Mexican Train. She loved an adventure, and was always game for a road trip. She especially looked forward to visits with her sisters and brother, whom she loved deeply. She will be remembered for the creativity, strength, warmth and generosity she shared so freely with those around her.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Kendall Cody of Cazenovia; her children, Anne (Benjamin Forman) Cody of Brookline, MA, Susan Cody of Syracuse, Kathleen (Adam) Cody Becker of Cazenovia and Bill (Monica) Cody of Cazenovia; her brother, William Schopfer of Sacramento, CA; her sisters, Ellen Burke of Rockville, CT, Rosemary (Donald) Barr of Downingtown, PA, Susan (Daniel) Fetters of Tuscon, AZ and Margaret (Leonard) Pepe of Milton, MA; her grandchildren, Eloise, Jacob, Hannah, Cecily, Genevieve, Mallory, Emma, Allison, Samuel and Sara as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Jane was predeceased by her brothers-in-law, Martin Burke, John Sengle and Edward Eagan; her sisters-in-law, Kathleen Sengle and Mildred Eagan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at 11 a.m. in St. James Church, 6 Green Street in Cazenovia. The Cody family will receive friends at a luncheon in the fellowship hall of the church following the Mass. There are no calling hours. Contributions in Jane’s memory may be made to CAVAC, 106 Nelson St., Cazenovia, NY or to the Cazenovia Fire Department, 121 Albany St., Cazenovia, NY 13035.
