Mary Anne Romig's Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Mary Anne Young Romig, age 87, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2026, in Dewitt, New York.

Mary Anne was born on January 22, 1939, in Syracuse, New York, to Dorothy Condon Young and John Carroll Young. She was an avid horseback rider and played field hockey at the Convent School. After graduating from the Convent School, she attended Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY, and graduated from LeMoyne College in 1962. As a young woman, she fondly recalled long evenings spent discussing politics with her father, conversations that helped shape her lifelong curiosity and engagement with the world.

Inspired by her father’s work as a judge, Mary Anne pursued a career in journalism and became one of the first female reporters for the Syracuse Post-Standard. In that role, she covered both breaking and meaningful stories, including being the first at her paper to receive news of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination as it came across the wire. She was known for her dedication to reporting on important political issues, as well as her passion for sharing uplifting and educational stories with her readers.

Mary Anne and John E. Romig married on May 6, 1967. Together they built a life in Cazenovia, NY, where they raised their family.

A woman of deep faith, Mary Anne carried her beliefs into every aspect of her life. Her faith was a guiding light, reflected in her grace, kindness, and steadfast “glass half full” outlook. She was a devoted and active member of the Cazenovia community and St. James Parish, where she served as a religious education teacher and Eucharistic minister. Through her involvement with the Cazenovia Garden Club and her artistic gift for flower arranging, Mary Anne also volunteered her time to beautifully decorate St. James Church during the holidays for years.

In the mid-1980s, Mary Anne combined her organizational skills and legal insight to establish her own business managing law-firm libraries throughout the greater Syracuse area.

Later, John and Mary Anne spent their winters in Florida. They enjoyed exploring restaurants, forming new friendships, and hosting family and friends from the North who came to escape the winter weather.

Mary Anne lived an active and joyful life. She was an avid cross-country skier, golfer, and tennis player, and served for several years as president of the Tennis Association of Central New York (TACNY). She was a longtime member of the Cazenovia Club, the Century Club of Syracuse, and the Onondaga Golf and Country Club. A spirited competitor, she enjoyed games of Hearts and bridge, loved trivia, and never missed an episode of Jeopardy!. Mary Anne was a lifelong, loyal fan of Syracuse Orangemen basketball and football, cheering the players on through every season. Known for her warmth, hospitality, and playful sense of humor, including her love of practical jokes, Mary Anne brought laughter and celebration to every holiday and gathering. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Mary Anne is survived by her children, John (Karen) Romig of Cazenovia, NY, Thomas (Cristina) Romig of Honeoye Falls, NY, Elizabeth (Mark) Feitelberg of Wayland, MA, and her brothers, John Young, Gregory (Susan) Young, Peter (Alice Pat) Young, and countless nieces and nephews. Her cherished grandchildren, Nathan, Mitchell, Thomas, Peter, Elsie, Grace, and Whitney, will hold her memory in their hearts always. She was predeceased by her husband, John E. Romig, Sr.; her brother Philip Young; her sister-in-law Linda; and John and Linda’s son, her nephew Timothy Young.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday, April 10, 2026 at St. James Church. Burial will be in Fayetteville Cemetery.
