Stuart Jonathan Singer, MD was born on August 31, 1959, in Norfolk, Virginia. He died unexpectedly of a heart attack in his sleep at age 67 in his home in Cazenovia, New York on October 9, 2026. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mary McGrath and their three children Hannah, Thomas, and Daniel Singer, his grandson Forrest Rigby, his brother Jeffrey Singer, his nephew Joseph Singer, and his mother Lorraine Singer. His is predeceased by his father, David Singer.

Stuart was an exceptionally brilliant and active man with a unique sense of humor. From a young age he pursued a wide variety of academic and athletic interests. Some of his favorite sports included sailing, skiing, cycling, windsurfing, soccer, snowshoeing, and skeet shooting. He was also an avid car enthusiast who was eager to bring his beloved Lotus sport car to the track. He excelled in scientific disciplines and completed a five-year BS/MD program at Pennsylvania State University and Jefferson Medical College. His internship was at Wilmington Medical Center, and he completed Radiology residency at Medical Center Hospital of Vermont in Burlington. He was then accepted to a prestigious fellowship in Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts.

He was the captain of the soccer team during Medical School and at University of Vermont. It was in Vermont that he met the love of his life, Mary McGrath, MD, who came for try outs for the team. They married 1986 and spent a lifetime together traveling, excelling in their respective medical fields, and raising a family with three children and innumerable pets. Stuart had just become a grandfather before his untimely passing and had been excited to watch his grandson grow up.

Professionally, Stuart was an accomplished and pioneering interventional radiologist. He published numerous journal articles and book chapters, presented at many conferences, and was inducted as a Fellow in the Society of Interventional Radiology in 2023. He was director of Peripheral Vascular Interventions at Crouse Hospital from 1996-2006; he was an attending radiologist at the Syracuse VA Medical Center from 2020-2024 and returned to working primarily at Crouse from 2025 until his untimely death. Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his expertise in minimally invasive, image-guided therapies and complex vascular interventions, helping to expand and advance interventional radiology services across Central New York. The procedures Stuart performed saved and improved the lives of thousands of patients throughout his career, including diagnosing and treating cancers, restoring fertility, and reducing chronic pain. His expertise was called on in 2016 when he had a 2,000 year old patient: a mummy called Hen who is housed at the Cazenovia Library. He performed a biopsy and imaging to help determine the cause of death.

Stuart served as a teacher and mentor in his capacity as an attending physician to countless trainees and colleagues. He also invented and patented a radiographic measurement device to noninvasively determine cervical disc space distance in children with Down Syndrome to reduce neck injuries. He was always eager to learn new skills and techniques and master the latest devices to provide his patients with the highest level of medical care. As much as he enjoyed performing minimally invasive surgeries, he also loved learning about his patients, making them laugh, and putting them at ease during their procedures. His curiosity was boundless, and his resourcefulness unmatched.

When not at work, Stuart was incredibly proud of his three children, Hannah, Thomas and Daniel. He loved to travel and take the family on adventures, visiting Costa Rica, California, Aruba, the Dominican Republic. In 1994 he took his family on a seven-week trip to New Zealand where he volunteered at the hospital in Christchurch. He and his brother biked through Europe together before beginning their medical careers and spent time in Israel as well.

Stuart was always busy, and his hobbies included photography, motorsport, beekeeping, landscaping, model trains, aircrafts and rockets, Syracuse basketball, snowmobiling, reading legal thrillers, and spending time with his wife and their many pets including his beloved Irish Wolfhounds. He adored his giant dogs and they loved him fiercely. He also wrote a screenplay that was a thriller about organ donation. He learned the nuances of the equestrian sport of Dressage to help his wife in her high-level competition and learned to design and manage a barn of horses and transport them around the country to shows. He always stayed up to date on current events and politics and was a supporter of Ukraine and intelligent policies.

It’s impossible to capture every facet of Stuart Singer in words, he had a mind that was always learning and working. He never stopped trying to improve the world around him, whether through physical mending, spreading information, or coming up with original solutions. He was active up to the day of his passing. He will be missed every day by his family, friends, pets, and colleagues. The universe will miss this incredible man.
